5 out of 5 stars A Great Little Gadget   September 2, 2010

For years I've been carrying a miniature Swiss Army Knife on my keyring. I can't count the number of times it has turned out to be a godsend.

I now have a Photon Freedom on my keyring right next to the Swiss Army Knife. The thing is TINY but bright and easy to use.

Okay, so I only use the on-off switch. That's all I need. I've not even tried the other functions. I can't see why I would need them.

And I don't use the comes-with clip-ring or the plastic doodads. Simplicity wins. I took off the clip ring and use only the tiny spiral ring to hold in on my keyring. Works fine, and it's secure.

There are so many times a little extra light is handy, especially after dark. This gizmo is something I'll always have in my pocket. Right next to my Swiss Army Knife.

There are cheesy knock-offs of the Photon on the market -- right here on Amazon. Not worth the money, no matter how many you get for the price of a Photon. I made that mistake, because I believed the reviews, and regretted it as soon as I got the product. It was junk. Get the real thing and save yourself some grief.

5 out of 5 stars Tough, useful, super-bright little light!!   August 27, 2010

I got a bunch of these over the past few months -- they've proven to be a big hit with family members young & old, very convenient for all kinds of situations. Checking outdoor seating areas for cleanliness after dark, reading fine print labels indoors, finding small dropped objects, and so on.

What really impressed me is how tough and well built these lights are. I recently dropped one to the bottom of a swimming pool, where it stayed for a few minutes until I could retrieve it. Even though it's not rated waterproof as far as I know, it worked fine afterward. The really impressive part -- I opened up the battery compartment, and the inside of the light looked bone dry even after the extended "swim"!

Superior construction, quality weatherproofing, and super-bright performance -- that's what makes these lights worth their price.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Keychain Light   August 4, 2010

After recently losing my keys, I was in the market for the simplest functional flashlight keychain I could find - and the Photon Freedon LED fits the bill perfectly. It's small (a little bigger than a quarter), bright, and very waterproof. It's already accidentally been through the wash and is still going strong. I don't really use any of the flashlight modes other than "on", but I guess I appreciate that they're there.

The next time I lose my keys, I'll definitely be buying another one of these to start anew.

5 out of 5 stars Photons are the real deal   June 23, 2010

Photon lights sometimes get a bad rap because there are so many cheap knockoffs that look identical and cost $1 or are even thrown in as freebies with orders. But there's a reason why those lights cost only $1. Their build quality is really cheap. And while they may put out the same initial brightness, it lasts for a lot less time. Photons are well-built and long lasting.

With the Freedom model, Photon has upped the ante even more by providing various light modes. I admit I found the strobe modes a little bit difficult to cycle through. You have to press and hold for up to 15-20 seconds to cycle through all the modes. Which can be a bit hard on the fingers because you have to apply a decent amount of pressure. But I hardly use strobe so that's just icing. What I really like about this light is that it allows variable brightness with instant access to both the highest and lowest setting in regular mode. Want the highest setting? Press and release quickly and you're there. Want the lowest setting? Press and hold for about 1.5 seconds and you're there. And you can always ramp up to any brightness in between by pressing and holding to go from low->high or high->low. I like that it stays on without having to continuously squeeze it. Yes this means it could accidentally get turned while in your pocket. But I carry mine everywhere and haven't had that happen to me yet.

It comes nicely accessorized with a keychain clip and a neck lanyard. One minor gripe is that the battery cover is just a snap-on. It's wedged in there pretty tightly, but I would have preferred a screw holding it in place. Although at least this way you could replace the battery without a screwdriver, although you might still need one to pry open the lid because the notch is pretty hard to get at with a fingernail.

2 out of 5 stars The basic light works   June 19, 2010

The basic light works & increases/decreases in candlepower with a firm press of the single button control. All other functions such as S.O.S.; Slow Beacon; Medium Beacon; Fast Flash & use for Morse Code are non-existent.The light operates for about 10 seconds before auto turn-off. It does not operate in a sustained light mode. The ad shows it being used as an identifier with the LED keychain. As long as you were able to keep pressing the button, it could be used that way. Not convenient at all. This is in no way a miniature flashlight!
